The month of March is one of the hardest stretches in teaching. You are probably running on fumes, caffeine, and the hope of summer time. And yet, here you are. Showing up. Teaching lessons. Answering the same question seventeen times. We know first-hand that teaching may not feel glamorous, but it is powerful. Right now, in this stretch, when energy is low and patience is tested, is where your impact matters most. Even when it feels like you are just keeping the classroom running with sheer willpower, you are making a difference in ways you cannot always see.
The Invisible Wins You’re Already Crushing (Even If No One Clapped)
Teaching is one of the only jobs where your biggest wins are quiet. There is no visible scoreboard. No trophy ceremony. No one announces, “Congratulations, you successfully convinced a student to write their name on their paper today.” And yet, that is a win.
Your impact shows up in the little things. It is the student who once refused to work but now, at least gives it a try. It is the one who walks into your room and feels safe, even if they pretend they do not care. It is the ‘light bulb’ moment a student says, “Wait… I get it,” and you resist the urge to throw a full-on victory celebration.
This time of year can make you question if anything is sticking. But this is actually when your earlier work begins showing up. You have spent months building relationships, routines, and trust. That does not disappear just because everyone is a little more tired, yet still somehow a little more talkative. You are planting seeds every day. Some will grow tomorrow. Some will grow years from now. Some will grow when that student is 25 and suddenly realizes, “Oh… that teacher was right."
Why This Matters
Education is not just about getting through standards or making it to the last day before summer break. It is about shaping people. Every single day, you influence how students see themselves. You are helping build confidence, resilience, and curiosity, even on the days when you feel like you are mostly putting out small fires.
When teachers forget their impact, burnout sneaks in fast. It starts to feel like you are just managing behavior, grading papers, and counting down the days. But when you remember your purpose, it shifts everything. Suddenly, that small moment of encouragement matters. That extra bit of patience matters. Even your ability to laugh matters when everything feels slightly chaotic.
Your March Reset Plan (The Final Stretch Edition)
Here are simple, realistic ways to refuel and finish strong:
Look for the “used to” moments. Think about when your students used to struggle with what they can now do. Even small progress counts. If a student used to do nothing and now does something, that is growth!
Start a smile file. Save kind emails, funny student quotes, and notes of appreciation. Scan them, take pictures of them on your phone. Save them in a desktop or phone folder or a real, literal folder. On hard days, read through them. It is proof that what you are doing matters.
Lower the bar just a TINY bit. Not every lesson needs to be amazing right now. Sometimes a solid, calm, everyone-survived lesson is a success. This season is about endurance, not perfection.
Lean on your people. Talk to another teacher. Share stories, laugh, vent. No one understands this time of year like someone living it alongside you.
Embrace the countdown. Yes, you are counting down to summer break. That is normal. Lean into it without guilt.
Laugh whenever possible. If you do not laugh, you might cry. And while both are valid, laughing makes the day go faster.
