Make Foam Sand | Arts and Crafts Fun

Written by Ryan Thompson | Fri, Jul 14, 2017

Watch Handy Dan and Junkbot show you how to build sand castles at home by making foam sand out of stuff you can just find around the house.

Get to making your own sand castle with Handy Dan and Junkbot!

Step 1: Gather your supplies

You only need two ingredients to make your foam sand.

  • Play sand
  • Shaving cream

Oh, and make sure you do this project somewhere where you can make a bit of a mess....

Step 2: Add shaving cream to the sand

Spray the shaving over the sand making sure to distribute it evenly.

Handy Dan does this by spraying it in a spiral pattern.

Step 3: Mix sand and shaving cream together

Use your hands the same way baker does to mix the ingredients for bread. This is is called kneading, and it's the best way to mix your sand and shaving cream into a dough.

Step 4: Evaluate need for more shaving cream

Test the consistency of the dough. If it doesn't easily form into a ball in your hands without falling apart, add more shaving cream.  Keep adding shaving cream until the mixture reaches the desired consistency.

Step 5: Sculpt, shape and create a sand castle!

Fill a cup with the sand. Turn over and remove the cup. Voila! A sand castle!

Use other things you might find in the kitchen, like a jello mold, a bowl or a carafe to give variation to the shapes you create!
