How to Make a Lava Lamp | Science and Art Project

Written by Ryan Thompson | Fri, Aug 4, 2017

Let Handy Dan and his lovable sidekick Junkbot show you how to make safe lava that doesn't burn and turn it into your very own lava lamp.  This fun do-it-yourself activity can be made from common items you can usually find around the house.

Have a groovy time with Handy Dan and Junkbot as they show you how to make your very own lava lamp!

Step 1: Gather your supplies

You only need to find a few common items to make your lava lamp:

  • Empty plastic bottle with a cap
  • Water
  • Food coloring
  • Vegetable oil
  • Alka-Seltzer tablet

Step 2: Fill the plastic bottle

Very carefully pour the vegetable oil into the plastic bottle until it is about 5/6 full.

Then, fill the bottle by adding water to the oil, all the way to the top.

Step 3: Add food coloring

Put the tip of the food coloring bottle inside the rim of the plastic bottle so that it's just above the surface of the water and add droplets of food coloring.

Step 3: Add the Alka Seltzer tablet

Break the Alka-Seltzer tablet into four equal sized pieces.

Then add one of the four pieces to the bottle.

Finally, put the cap on the bottle.

Step 4: Watch the bubble form

When the bubbling dies down add another Alka Seltzer tablet. Experiment by adding different colors to other bottles and different amounts of vegetable oil and water to make your own lava lamp unique!
