The Best School Assembly Ever! Recommended School Shows!

Posted on Thu, Jun 16, 2011

Got your attention didn’t I? Well, the truth is there really isn’t any way to tell you what “the best school assembly” is, because it all depends upon your school and what you are looking for. Truthfully, there are many great assemblies for schools. And, equally, we have seen some that are really bad. And most likely there are many in the middle. But among the very best school shows there is one thing they all have in common: one size does not fit all!

MOS-17.pngIf you are in a primary school with just grades PK through 2, the very best school assembly program will be very different for you than it will be for a Middle school in an urban environment with 750 kids.

If you are a rural elementary in Ohio seeking a program for your fourth and fifth grade to support Ohio history, the very best school assembly will be very different from a Middle School in Kentucky looking for something on Astronomy.

Children’s appreciation of different kinds of performers and different styles of performance changes as they grow. A puppet show that plays well with Kindergarten may well be a dismal failure with 8th graders. I say may, because there are always exceptions.

Schedule two performances for elementary schools! This allows the performer to adjust his performance so as to best appeal to the age he is addressing.

Even so, there are some programs that, even in the hands of a great school assembly performer, just do not pay well to all ages. There are many great school assemblies around that are fine for grades K-5, but just are not appropriate for grades 6-8 and above. Similarly, there are some wonderful programs that are great for grades 2 and above but just cannot really engage the minds of grades 1 and younger.

Bully21.jpgMost important, choose your topics carefully. Purely entertaining programs are a great diversion, but these days with the emphasis on testing and “time on task” schools are hard pressed to make time for simple entertainment. Better to pick programs which, while entertaining and engaging, are also designed from the ground up to support curriculum goals. If teachers need help in math then pick a good assembly program about math. If the school is focusing on bully prevention or character counts issues then there are great shows available in these areas. If a school has a theme such as science or social studies, choose school shows that are in these fields such as a program in Chemistry or Climate Change for science or a show about Mark Twain or Native Americans for social studies. Everyone wins!

So, the answer to the question “What is the very best school assembly program?” is very simple. It all depends upon who you are and what you are looking for!
