School assemblies can be exciting, memorable, and a welcome change from the usual classroom routine. But when you’re looking at your school calendar, you might wonder whether taking students out of class for a presentation is really worth it. Between testing schedules, curriculum requirements, and everything else teachers are expected to squeeze into a school day, every minute counts. So, what does research say about learning experiences outside the traditional classroom? The answer may surprise you. When planned with a purpose, educational assemblies can do more than entertain students. They can spark curiosity, build connections, and help students understand concepts in ways that a textbook or lecture alone may not accomplish.
The Research Behind Learning by Experience
Experiential learning is exactly what it sounds like: learning through experience. Instead of simply reading about a concept or listening to someone explain it, students actively participate, observe, explore, and make connections.
Research supports the value of this approach. A 2024 review published in Educational Research Review examined studies on learning activities outside the traditional classroom and found positive effects on both short-term academic achievement and long-term retention. Another 2024 review from the UCL Institute of Education on experiential learning examined 44 peer-reviewed studies and found evidence connecting experiential learning approaches to improved science, mathematics, and broader academic skills.
Of course, not every assembly automatically becomes a meaningful learning experience just because students are sitting somewhere other than their classrooms. The content, presentation, student participation, and connections to what students are learning all matter. The goal isn’t simply to give students something different to watch. It’s to give them something meaningful to experience.
More Than a Break From the Classroom
Students spend much of their school day reading, writing, listening, and completing assignments. Those activities are important, but students also benefit from opportunities to see how information connects to the world around them. An engaging presentation can introduce a new topic, reinforce something students have already studied, or inspire questions that lead to further classroom exploration.
Assemblies can also create a shared experience across an entire school. Students from different classrooms and grade levels have an opportunity to learn together, discuss what they observed, and connect over something new. And let’s be honest: sometimes students need to see a concept in action before it really clicks.
So, What Makes an Assembly Worth Your Time?
Not all assemblies are created equal. There is a stark contrast between simply filling an auditorium with students for an hour and providing an experience that is strategically designed to create memorable moments for both students and educators. When choosing an educational assembly, look for a program that checks several boxes including these:
1. It Serves a Purpose
A great assembly should have a clear educational goal. Whether the focus is science, STEM, kindness, geography, astronomy, or another subject, students should leave being able to recall something they couldn’t before they walked in.
2. Students Are Part of the Experience
Students shouldn’t spend the entire program sitting quietly while someone talks at them. That is a lecture (and typically, less effective than an experience even for an adult). Look for opportunities for students to participate, answer questions, make predictions, interact with presenters, or become part of the demonstration in some way.
3. It Connects to What Happens in the Classroom
The best assemblies don’t compete with classroom learning. They complete it. When students recognize concepts from their classroom lessons during an assembly, the experience becomes another way to reinforce what they already know. Assemblies should say the same thing the teacher is saying, just in a different way.
4. The Experience Is Memorable
There is a reason teachers often hear students talking about an assembly weeks or even months later. Experiences give students something memorable to recall. That memory can become a learning connection or even a reference point when the concept comes up again in class.
5. The Program Is Designed for Students
Age-appropriate content matters. A program designed for kindergarten students shouldn’t be expected to hold the attention of eighth graders. Look for companies that understand how to engage at different age levels, adapt the program as needed to retain attention, and keep the educational content at the center of the experience.
6. There Is Something to Take Back to the Classroom
The best assemblies don’t necessarily end when the presenter packs up. A good question, demonstration, or new idea can give teachers something to build on, replicate, or refer back to after the program is over. Look for presenters who don’t answer every question, but rather inspire some wonder and spark discussion when students get back to their desks.
Not All Educational Assemblies Are Created Equal
This is where experience matters.
At Mobile Ed, educational assemblies are what we do. For more than 47 years, we’ve been creating educational experiences that bring learning to life for students across the country. We understand that schools don’t have time or money to waste on programs.
Mobile Ed's programs are designed to combine education and entertainment, giving students an experience that is engaging without losing the learning.
We bring the experience directly to schools with programs that can…
-
-
-
Introduce students to STEM concepts through interactive experiences
-
Reinforce classroom learning in a completely different setting
-
Encourage teamwork, kindness, and positive decision-making
-
Get students involved rather than simply asking them to sit and listen
-
Give an entire school a shared educational experience
-
-
…all on YOUR school campus!
After more than four decades in the industry, we know what it takes to make an assembly presentation work. That experience puts Mobile Ed in a league of its own. Because when you’re giving up valuable classroom instructional time, you shouldn’t settle for an assembly that is mediocre. You want an experience that students will remember with fondness and that teachers will be eager to host again.
Make Your Next Assembly Count
An educational assembly should be worth every penny your school spends on it. The key is choosing an experience with purpose, strong educational content, student interaction, and an undeniable connection to learning. Let Mobile Ed bring that kind of experience to your school!
