Recently it was brought to light that several species of Australian birds now driven into extinction might have been saved with today’s knowledge and a little human effort (http://www.scientificamerican.com/blog/post.cfm?id=six-australian-birds-declared-extin-2011-01-06) In fact, it is estimated that a quarter of the species on Earth may disappear forever within the next quarter century. These include many lesser known creatures, but also some very well known animals, such as black rhinoceros and the Siberian Tiger. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/2000325.stm).
Kids need to be taught about this and about what actions need to be taken to forestall this devastation.
A science assembly like Animals and the Environment is a perfect way in which to do this. To get kids attention you first must seek out what they find exciting. Animals and the Environment accomplishes this by bringing into a school several different species of animals and reptiles and introducing them to the children in a very hands-on but non-threatening manner. The kids are mesmerized by the chance to see various animals up close. And what child isn’t spellbound by live animals ( what adult for that matter!)? 
All the while, the presenter is giving the audience an intense verbal lesson in how environmental issues are affecting animals al over the world and even in their own back yard.
Kids love animals. Kids love to learn about animals. Animals and the Environment is a perfect science assembly which will teach kids much about the place and future of animals in our world!
